Fluoride is a mineral that is naturally found in water and many foods. It is also found in toothpaste and mouth rinse.
Fluoride helps to strengthen teeth and protect them from tooth decay. As you eat and drink throughout the day, bacteria, sugars and acids attack and demineralize the enamel of your teeth. Fluoride works to slow down enamel breakdown and speed up remineralization of the tooth enamel, preventing tooth decay and cavities. The new enamel crystals that form are harder, larger, and more resistant to acid.
Professional fluoride treatment may be recommended by our dentist or hygienist during your regular dental checkup. And, fluoride treatment may be suggested if your teeth are prone to decay or if you are not receiving a sufficient amount of fluoride from other sources or if your drinking water is not fluoridated.
For your children, fluoride is important as it gives their teeth strength and keeps the teeth healthy as they develop.
Professional fluoride is now available in the form of a gel, varnish or foam.
